# Indoor Play Spaces in NYC for Freezing Days: Paid, Free and Library

*When it is freezing, pouring or both, a room full of foam shapes becomes the best idea in New York. Twelve indoor play spaces across the boroughs, from a $15.99 an hour open play to a library hour with no fee stated, with ages, prices and socks rules checked.*

By Dan Fitzpatrick, Boroughs & Brood. Updated Monday, October 5, 2026. Canonical: https://boroughsandbrood.com/guides/indoor-play-spaces-in-nyc.html

Good for: Under 5s, Mixed costs.

**The short answer:** For an indoor playground in NYC, paid open play runs from $15.99 an hour per child at House of Wonder in Clinton Hill (adults free, walk-ins welcome) and $20 an hour with one adult at PeekABooo in Long Island City, to $35 for 50 minutes at Chelsea Forest Play (reservation required). For cheap or free, try the Brooklyn Children's Museum on Thursdays 2pm to 5pm, or a Brooklyn Public Library Open Play Hour for kids 5 and under.

Checked in early October 2026. Prices, hours and whether you can walk in all change, so each place links to its own page.

Every New York parent has an indoor playground NYC shortlist by November, and if you're visiting you need one too. When the wind comes off the river and the playground is a sheet of ice, a room with foam slides, a ball pit and a coffee machine is worth more than a Michelin star. This guide covers twelve of them for children under about six: paid open play spaces in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island, four children's museums, and free options at the library. Where a website doesn't say a price, I say so, and I don't guess.

## Indoor playground NYC: the quick version

- Cheapest paid walk-in: House of Wonder in Clinton Hill, $15.99 an hour per child, adults free, no reservation needed.
- Cheapest with a parent included: PeekABooo in Long Island City, $20 for an hour with one kid and one adult.
- Best to book ahead: Chelsea Forest Play, $35 for 50 minutes, reservation required.
- Best free-ish: the Brooklyn Children's Museum on Thursday afternoons (2pm to 5pm), or a Brooklyn Public Library Open Play Hour for kids 5 and under.
- Best museum for toddlers: the Children's Museum of Manhattan (PlayWorks, ages 0 to 4) or NYSCI's Preschool Place (under 6).

> Every indoor playground has the same two rules: socks, and a snack you didn't pay $9 for. Pack both.

## How indoor play spaces work in NYC

Most paid spaces work on a timed session: you book or walk in, you get an hour or two, and you leave when the clock says so. Many insist on socks for everyone, children and adults, and the ones that do will sell you a pair of grippy ones at the front desk, which is a fine way to learn that your own socks have holes. Check the rules on the website before you go, because a barefoot toddler can be turned away.

Prices vary wildly, from $15.99 an hour to $35 for 50 minutes. Some charge adults and some don't. Check whether the price is per child or per family. Weekday mornings are usually the quietest, and wet weekend afternoons the busiest. If a space says it takes walk-ins, still check its capacity before you cross the borough with a stroller.

For the museums and libraries below, strollers are the main trap. Several museums won't let strollers into the exhibits, so budget a minute to park it and expect to carry a baby.

## Paid open play in Manhattan and Brooklyn

### Chelsea Forest Play (Chelsea, Manhattan)

A forest-themed indoor playground at 241 West 20th Street for ages 0 to 5. Open play is $35 per child for 50 minutes, by reservation only. Grippy socks are mandatory, there is shoe storage, and you can buy socks if you've forgotten them. The site adds that staff accommodate children who struggle with socks, which is kind.

The site doesn't list hours, an adult price, stroller storage or a cafe, so check those when you book. It is the priciest on this list per minute, so book the slot you actually want.

- Subway: 1 to 18 St (not on the MTA's accessible list); A/C/E to 14 St (accessible)
- Stroller: Not stated on the site
- Restrooms: Not stated on the site
- Cost: $35 per child for 50 minutes; adult price not stated
- Time: 50 minutes
- Check first: Reservation required; grippy socks only
- Website: https://www.chelseaforestplay.com/

### Good Day Play Cafe (Park Slope, Brooklyn)

A play cafe at 591 5th Avenue for ages 0 to 6, open daily 10am to 5pm (weekend hours vary, so check its Instagram). Sessions are two hours: 10am to 12pm, 12:30pm to 2:30pm and 3pm to 5pm. Booking ahead is recommended, and walk-ins are welcome if there is space. Socks are required for children and adults.

The cafe serves Stumptown coffee, fresh-made juices and healthy finger foods. The site doesn't list the session price. Mommy Poppins listed about $28 for two hours, so check before you go.

- Subway: R to Prospect Av (not on the MTA's accessible list), roughly a 5 minute walk
- Stroller: Not stated on the site
- Restrooms: Not stated on the site
- Cost: Not on the site; Mommy Poppins listed about $28 for 2 hours
- Time: 2 hours
- Check first: Weekend hours (via Instagram) and whether your session has space
- Lesser known: yes

### House of Wonder (Clinton Hill, Brooklyn)

A play space at 988 Fulton Street for ages 0 to 6, with a cafe serving specialty coffee and light Nordic food. Open play is $15.99 an hour per child, adults enter free, and walk-ins are welcome daily from 9am to 6pm with no reservation needed. A membership is $185 a month per child. The site says you can check the current capacity at vibe.houseofwonder.co before you go, which is a very sensible idea.

It is the best value paid play space I could find on an official page, mostly because the adult is free.

- Subway: C to Clinton-Washington Avs (not on the MTA's accessible list)
- Stroller: Not stated on the site
- Restrooms: Not stated on the site
- Cost: $15.99 an hour per child; adults free
- Time: 1 to 2 hours
- Check first: Capacity at vibe.houseofwonder.co
- Lesser known: yes

## Paid open play in Queens and Staten Island

### PeekABooo (Long Island City, Queens)

At 47-07 34th Avenue, for kids 7 and under. Open Sunday to Thursday 10am to 6pm and Friday and Saturday 10am to 7pm. The price is $20 for one hour including one kid and one adult, $25 for two hours, $5 per child for each additional hour, and $10 for an extra adult. There is food for sale (pizza, chicken nuggets and fries).

It is a good value, and it takes older children than most, so it works if your five-year-old has a three-year-old sibling. The site doesn't say anything about socks, strollers or reservations.

- Subway: M/R to 46 St (not on the MTA's accessible list)
- Stroller: Not stated on the site
- Restrooms: Not stated on the site
- Cost: $20 for 1 hour (one kid and one adult); $25 for 2 hours; extra child $5 an hour; extra adult $10
- Time: 1 to 2 hours
- Check first: Reservations and socks, which the site doesn't mention
- Lesser known: yes
- Website: https://www.peekabooonyc.com/

### Little Sharks Playground (Southwest Staten Island, Staten Island)

At 27 Brienna Court, for kids ages 1 to 11, open Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 6pm. The site lists food, snacks, coffee and beverages on site. Prices aren't on the page (Mommy Poppins listed about $30 for 2 hours), and there is no transit information, so plan a car or a bus ride from the ferry.

It is the only dedicated indoor play space I could verify on Staten Island, and its age range goes up to 11, which matters if the older sibling is dragging their feet.

- Subway: Not stated on the site; plan a car, taxi or bus from St. George
- Stroller: Not stated on the site
- Restrooms: Not stated on the site
- Cost: Not on the site; Mommy Poppins listed about $30 for 2 hours
- Time: 2 hours

The New York Hall of Science has a space designed especially for children under 6. It is open Wednesday to Sunday 10am to 5pm (last entry 4pm), and children 2 to 17 are $19 for general admission. The museum says strollers are permitted throughout the building, which makes it one of the easiest here. Transit: the 7 to 111 St, or the Q23 or Q58 to Corona Avenue and 108th Street.

### Bronx Children's Museum (Concourse, The Bronx)

At 725 Exterior Street, on the second floor. Its directions page says to take the 2, 4 or 5 to 149th Street and Grand Concourse and walk west, or the B, D or 4 to 161st-Yankee Stadium and walk south and west, or the Bx13 bus to the Bronx Terminal Market stop at River Avenue and 149th Street, then one block west to Exterior Street.

There is limited stroller parking near the reception desk, and strollers aren't allowed in exhibit areas without a pass from the front desk. Hours and prices aren't on the pages I could read, so check bxcm.org or ring 718-775-3450 before you go. Parking is available for a fee at the Bronx Terminal Market.

- Subway: 2/4/5 to 149 St-Grand Concourse, then walk west; B/D/4 to 161 St-Yankee Stadium (accessible), then walk

## Free and library

### Brooklyn Public Library Open Play Hour (Brooklyn Heights, Brooklyn)

The library lists an Open Play Hour for kids 5 and under, with games and toys in the downstairs multipurpose room and no registration. The listing I read was at Brooklyn Heights Library, 286 Cadman Plaza West, and was a past event on March 12, 2025, 10:30am to 11:15am. Treat that as an example, and check the library's calendar for current sessions at your branch.

No fee is mentioned. It is a short session, so it works as a morning warm-up for a toddler, not a whole day.

- Subway: Depends on the branch; the Brooklyn Heights branch is near Borough Hall (check the library's page)
- Stroller: Not stated on the listing
- Restrooms: Not stated on the listing
- Cost: No fee mentioned
- Time: 45 minutes
- Check first: Current dates on the library calendar; the listing was from 2025
- Lesser known: yes
- Website: https://www.bklynlibrary.org/calendar/open-play-hour-brooklyn-heights-library-20250312-1030am

### Brooklyn Public Library, Central Library (Prospect Heights, Brooklyn)

At 10 Grand Army Plaza, open Monday to Thursday 9am to 8pm, Friday and Saturday 9am to 6pm, Sunday 1pm to 5pm. The library calls itself fully accessible and has a Youth Wing, but the page doesn't say whether it has play areas, toys or stroller facilities, so don't promise a toddler anything beyond books.

It is a warm, dry place to read a picture book, and it sits right beside Prospect Park.

- Subway: 2/3 to Grand Army Plaza (not on the MTA's accessible list)
- Stroller: Not stated on the library's page; the building is described as fully accessible
- Restrooms: Not stated on the page
- Cost: Free
- Time: 45 to 60 minutes
- Check first: Youth Wing hours and programs
- Lesser known: yes
- Website: https://www.bklynlibrary.org/locations/central

For the Bronx, Manhattan and Queens, ask at your own library branch. Queens Public Library's kids page highlights a Children's Library Discovery Center with hands-on exhibits for ages 3 to 12, though its page doesn't say where it is or what it costs. In Manhattan and the Bronx, check the NYPL event calendar for open play and storytimes at your branch.

### National Museum of the American Indian (Financial District, Manhattan)

A free dry option in Lower Manhattan: a Smithsonian museum at One Bowling Green, open daily 10am to 5pm except December 25, always free with no tickets. The museum's page mentions a children's activity center called imagiNATIONS and says student groups can reserve timed entry, but it does not give an age range or hours, so ask before you plan a morning around it.

- Subway: 4/5 to Bowling Green (accessible); 1 to South Ferry (accessible)
- Stroller: Not stated on the museum's page
- Restrooms: Not stated on the museum's page
- Cost: Free
- Time: 1 hour
- Check first: imagiNATIONS ages and hours
- Lesser known: yes
- Website: https://americanindian.si.edu/visit/newyork
