The short answer

Central Park is large enough that one visit never covers it, but a three-stop plan works well with young children: Heckscher Playground first, the Carousel in the middle, the Central Park Zoo to finish. Heckscher is the oldest playground in the park (created in 1927) and the largest at 1.8 acres, with swings, slides, a maze-like climber and an extensive water feature.

What it is like

The Carousel is mid-park at 65th Street, open daily from 10am to dusk, weather permitting. It carries 57 horses and two chariots, and while the present machine went in in 1951, the carousel itself dates to 1908 and is regarded as an important work of American folk art. A single ride is $4, and a 15-ride book is $52. There are no restrooms at the Carousel, so go at Heckscher first.

The Central Park Zoo at 64th Street and Fifth Avenue is open 10am to 5:30pm (last entry 4:30pm) and needs a date-specific ticket: $22.95 adult 13 and over, $18.95 senior 65 and over, $16.95 child 3 to 12, under 3 free. The ticket includes the Tisch Children's Zoo and one visit to the 4-D Theater. Expect sea lions, snow leopards, grizzly bears and penguins.

Do not try to do all three before lunch with a four-year-old; a seven-year-old might survive it, but only just. The sensible move is to choose two, and to arrive at the playground before the strollers do.

Best time to go
