The NYC subway with a stroller: every accessible station

Every subway station the MTA lists as accessible, on a map and borough by borough, which big family attractions have a step-free station nearby, and the honest rules for getting a stroller around New York.

The short answer

In the MTA's station data, 125 station complexes are fully accessible and 15 more are partly accessible (one direction, or some lines only), out of 445 in all. The rest are stairs only. Elevators do break, so check the MTA's elevator and escalator status before every trip, and the Staten Island Ferry is step-free.

Before every trip, check the MTA's elevator and escalator status. Elevators go out of service, and a station on this page is only step-free when its elevator works. The MTA's accessibility pages have the full picture.

New York with a stroller is perfectly doable, it just takes a bit of planning, because most subway stations have stairs and nothing else. The trick is to plan your trip around the ones that don't. Here's every station the MTA lists as accessible, on a map and as a list, and the big family days out with a step-free station within a short walk.

The honest rules

  • Elevators break. Not every day, but often enough to plan for. Check the MTA's elevator and escalator status before you leave, again before you change trains, and have a plan B station in your head. A working elevator in the morning is a promise, not a guarantee, by the afternoon.
  • Accessible doesn't always mean easy. Some elevators are at one end of a long platform, some are on a different corner of the street, and a few stations are only accessible in one direction. The list below says which, from the MTA's own notes.
  • The service entrance gate. Most stations have a gate beside the turnstiles, and that's how strollers and wheelchairs get through. How you pay and get it opened varies by station, so if you're unsure, ask the station agent. If there's no agent and no way through, you'll be folding.
  • Buses. You don't have to fold your stroller on MTA buses. At busy times, though, tucking it out of the aisle or folding it is a courtesy the other passengers will notice, and so will the driver.
  • The Staten Island Ferry is step-free. And free. You can roll on and roll off, and the view of the Statue of Liberty and the harbor costs nothing at all, which is the best deal in the city.
  • Stairs happen. With a stroller, the stations with stairs only aren't impossible, just a two-person job. Plenty of New Yorkers will offer to take the other end. Say yes, say thank you, and keep a hand on the child.
