The short answer

I picked the Empire State Building over Top of the Rock for families for one reason: its official pages spell out the family deal. The Empire State Building says kids under 6 enter free, discounted tickets are available for children 6 to 12, and there is a dedicated Family Ticket Bundle (86th Floor admission, flexible entry, express access, or an upgraded express experience that includes the 102nd Floor). The bundle page does not publish bundle prices or composition, so check the cart for the numbers.

What it is like

Top of the Rock lists timed admission from $42 and an All-Inclusive Pass from $72, which is cheaper at the starting line. But on the pages I could read, I found no standing family discount: the kids' offer I found was a spring promotion that ended April 24. So the Empire State Building's rules are clearer, even if its adult headline price (86th Floor from $46; both floors from $81; Flex from $66; Express from $87) is higher.

The practical bits. The building's FAQ gives the visitor entrance as 20 W. 34th Street, between Fifth and Sixth avenues, with a separate ticket office at 12 W 34th Street. Hours were 10am to 11pm on the page I read, varying seasonally. Strollers are permitted in the building and elevators but must be folded on observation decks; accessible restrooms are on the 86th Floor. There are no lockers, and large bags and outside food and drink are prohibited.

A real caveat: you cannot see the Empire State Building from the Empire State Building. That is the best argument for the other one, and I leave it with you.

Best time to go

Tips before you go

  • Reservations are required; book your date ahead.
  • Travel light: no lockers or storage, and large bags are prohibited.
  • Fold the stroller at the deck; it is permitted elsewhere in the building.
  • Aim for an hour before sunset for the best light.
