Medieval art and a hilltop garden at the top of Manhattan. Washington Heights and Inwood, Manhattan.

Fort Tryon Park runs from Riverside Drive to Broadway and from West 192nd Street to Dyckman Street in the far north of Manhattan. NYC Parks says it holds the Heather Garden, the city's largest garden with unrestricted public access, along with playgrounds and Manhattan's largest dog run. The Met Cloisters sits inside it at 99 Margaret Corbin Drive. The Cloisters is open Sunday to Tuesday and Thursday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, closed Wednesdays.
Admission at the Cloisters is $30 for adults at the time of writing, free for children 12 and under, and pay what you wish for New York residents and NY, NJ and CT students. It has the art, architecture and gardens of medieval Europe, and its own pages mention storytimes, workshops and tours for families. The park itself is free, so you can do a hilltop picnic and a playground and skip the museum if the budget or the attention span says so.
The honest bit is access. The building is a landmark with limited step-free access, about 60 stairs inside, though the Met runs a free shuttle for visitors who need step-free entry and strollers are permitted throughout the museum. Note too that the path along Broadway between Arden Street and near Sherman Avenue has been closed for pathway reconstruction (NYC Parks, Phase 1), so check before you plan your route. The A train to 190 St is the standard way up.
A dry weekday morning; the Cloisters is closed Wednesdays.
