The short answer

Queens County Farm Museum is a 47-acre working farm inside the city limits, farmed continuously for more than three centuries, according to the museum. It is free to the public except on ticketed admission days and for groups, and it is open daily 10am to 5pm (closed New Year's Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day).

What it is like

Heritage-breed animals live on site: hens, steer, alpacas, sheep, goats and pigs, in designated areas. Hayrides run hourly, weather permitting, from 1pm to 4pm on weekdays and 11am to 4pm on weekends. The page does not list a hayride price, so check before you set your heart on one.

In the fall the farm runs the Amazing Maize Maze, a 3-acre corn maze, plus Fall on the Farm and the 43rd Queens Agricultural Fair. Ticketed days exist, which is exactly when free entry stops, so look at the calendar before you cross two boroughs on a bus.

It is not a quick subway trip. The nearest subway stops are miles away, so getting here usually means the Q46 bus or a car. Free street parking is available along Little Neck Parkway, and the on-site lot opens only for special events. Worth the effort for any child who thinks milk comes from the fridge, and for any adult who needs to remember that it does not.

Best time to go

Weekdays when hayrides run in the afternoon; weekends for the fall events.

  • Strollers, backpacks and bottled water are allowed, but there is no stroller or coat storage.
  • Park free on Little Neck Parkway; the lot is only for special events.
