The short answer

The Staten Island Children's Museum is at 1000 Richmond Terrace, Building M, on the grounds of Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Garden. It is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am to 5pm, with members-only time on Wednesday to Friday from 9am to 10am. At the time of writing tickets are $10 for adults and children alike, and children under 1 are free, which makes it one of the cheaper indoor options in the city.

What it is like

The Snack Zone Cafe is open 11am to 1pm Wednesday to Friday, and there are vending machines and picnic tables, so bringing your own lunch is plausible. The museum is closed on New Year's Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas (it does open on October 12 for Indigenous Peoples' and Italian Heritage Day). Snug Harbor's outdoor grounds are free from dawn to dusk, seven days a week.

Why is it a detour worth making? Because the ferry is free and the combination of Staten Island Ferry, a bus ride and a morning of play is a proper adventure for a six-year-old, and many visitors never make it to Staten Island. Be aware that Snug Harbor has said Chapel Road will have partial closures from 7am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday from August 2026 through mid-2027, which could affect parking and drop-offs.

Best time to go

A weekday morning; Snug Harbor's grounds are free to wander afterwards.

Tips before you go

  • The grounds of Snug Harbor are free; combine the museum with a walk through the gardens.
  • Chapel Road has partial weekday closures through mid-2027; check Snug Harbor before you drive.
  • Check the ferry and bus times from St. George; the S40 bus is the usual link (check the MTA).
