The short answer

Green-Wood is a working cemetery and a National Historic Landmark in Brooklyn, with the Main Entrance at Fifth Avenue and 25th Street open every day from 7am to 7pm. It is a place for quiet, not a playground, and the rules are strict: children must be accompanied by an adult at all times, no bicycles, scooters or rollerblades, no pets apart from service animals, no picnicking (you may have a snack or beverage), and no running, jogging or game-playing. Excessive noise is not allowed either.

What it is like

That makes it a good fit for a calm six or seven year old who likes looking at old things, and a poor fit for a toddler with a scooter. The cemetery runs a two-hour guided Historic Trolley Tour every Wednesday and the last Sunday of the month, covering its grounds, history and bird life. I could not find prices or any age policy for the trolley on the pages I read, so check the individual event listing or email contactus@green-wood.com; two hours on a trolley is a long ask of a small child.

Green-Wood is also famous for the wild parakeets that nest around the Main Entrance gate; I could not confirm this on the cemetery's own pages, so treat it as a likely but unverified bonus. Restrooms are available at all entrances, with accessible restrooms in the Modern Chapel near the Main Entrance and the Gatehouse. Free parking is available inside; park on the right-hand side of the road, not on the grass.

Best time to go

Dry daytime hours; the cemetery gate closes at 7pm.
