The short answer

Lefferts Historic House is inside Prospect Park, and the Carousel is in the park's Children's Corner, a short stroll away. The house was relocated to the park in 1918 from 563 Flatbush Avenue near Maple Street. The Alliance's page describes hands-on experiences, cultural performances and imaginative play, with stories of Indigenous resilience and of formerly enslaved Africans, plus video installations and pop-up exhibits.

What it is like

Opening hours matter here. The page I read lists September to November as Saturday and Sunday plus school holidays, 12pm to 5pm; I found no listing for the other months, so check before you go. I could not verify an admission price, so check with the Prospect Park Alliance at (718) 965-8951 or on its site.

The Prospect Park Carousel is $3 a ride on the Alliance's page. A separate Alliance page lists the public-hours season as March 28 to November 22, 2026, with weekend hours (12pm to 5pm on the event days listed), so look for the Carousel Rides event on the Alliance calendar before you head over.

Put them together and you have a gentle hour or two that suits the under-sixes and their grown-ups, with the rest of Prospect Park for the walk back to the train.

Best time to go

Weekend afternoons, fall to spring, when the house is open.

Tips before you go

  • Check the Alliance calendar for carousel days and house hours.
  • Bring small bills or a card; the carousel is $3 a ride.
  • Time it for a weekend afternoon in fall.
  • Use the park's other playgrounds if the house is closed.
