Boroughs & Brood.

The short answer

Little Island is a public park on Pier 55 in Hudson River Park, at West 13th Street, and entry is free. It opens at 6am daily, and closing time ranges from 9pm to midnight depending on the season (11pm on the day I checked). Timed tickets are only needed for performances in the Amph, never for general park entry.

What it is like

The main access is the South Bridge entrance, between 13th and 14th Streets. Strollers are welcome. Restrooms are near the Glade past the South Bridge, including an ADA-accessible all-gender restroom. Food carts and kiosks operate from April to October, and you can bring your own non-alcoholic food and drink, though outside alcohol is not allowed.

A few rules to know: bikes are not permitted (racks are just north and south on the Hudson River Park esplanade), and only working dogs assisting people with disabilities may enter, so leave the pup at home. Performances at the Amph and the Glade are announced each spring, so look at the calendar for any family shows.

Honest limit: it is mostly a place to wander, look and eat a snack, not a place with a playground checklist. Treat it as a pleasant hour by the river, and bring an adult for whom wandering is enough.

Best time to go

Weekday mornings; evenings when the sky does its thing.
