Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade With Kids: Where to Stand
The parade is free, loud and held outdoors in late November, which makes it a plan rather than an outing. Here is what is confirmed for 2026, what isn't yet, and where to stand with children who need a restroom at the worst possible moment.
The 2026 Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is Thursday, November 26 and is free to watch. It starts at Central Park West and West 77th Street and finishes at Herald Square, and NYC Tourism lists it as the 100th parade. Macy's start time and viewing rules for 2026 weren't readable when we checked on October 5, 2026; last year it ran 8:30am to noon, and the places recommended for spectators were Central Park West between 60th and 77th Streets, Central Park South and Sixth Avenue north of 38th Street.
Checked October 5, 2026. Macy's own parade page wouldn't give us readable details, so for 2026 we've used NYC Tourism's listing, and for the things not yet published we say what happened last year (NBC New York's 2025 coverage). Macy's publishes the final route, timings and viewing rules closer to the day, so recheck in November.
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with kids is a logistics exercise wearing a balloon costume. You will be standing on a sidewalk in late November with a six-year-old who has just announced, at the exact moment the first balloon appears, that they need a restroom. Everything below is built around that moment: where to stand so you can leave, where the restrooms actually are, and what to do instead if the crowd is the wrong size for your family.
The Thanksgiving Day parade with kids: what's confirmed for 2026
Date: Thursday, November 26, 2026, per NYC Tourism's listing, which calls it the parade's 100th anniversary and says it's expected to have a record 100 giant character balloons.
Route: starts at Central Park West and West 77th Street and goes downtown to Herald Square (151 West 34th Street). It's free for spectators.
Not confirmed when we checked: the 2026 start time, the list of places where public viewing isn't allowed, and the balloon inflation time and place.
Last year (2025): 8:30am to about noon. Central Park West to 59th Street, around Columbus Circle, along Central Park South, then down Sixth Avenue to 34th Street. It went ahead in any weather.
My plan, every time: decide on the restroom before you decide on the spot. A front-row view is worth nothing if getting out of it means a twenty-minute shuffle through the crowd.
Where to stand with kids
Last year's recommended spots were Central Park West between West 60th and 77th Streets, Central Park South, and Sixth Avenue between West 38th Street and Central Park South. Last year's no-public-viewing zones were the kickoff at West 77th and Central Park West, Central Park West between West 59th and 60th, Columbus Circle, Sixth Avenue between West 34th and 38th, and West 34th between Sixth and Seventh Avenues. Treat that as last year's pattern, not a promise. In past years Macy's has said its grandstand tickets aren't available to the general public.

Central Park West, 60s and 70s
Central Park in early April, the trees still bare and the towers showing through. Our own photo, April 2026.
The start of the route. The parade begins at West 77th Street and Central Park West, so this is where it's freshest and where you see it first. Last year officials closed the formation area (Columbus Avenue and Central Park West, with cross streets from 72nd to 86th) from early Thursday morning, so you'll be walking in from further away than you think. For 2026 the closures weren't published when we checked.
The catch is that there's nowhere to sit, so I'd worry about how long a small child can stand there.
Practical
Subway
1/2/3 to 72 St (accessible station, a few blocks west); B/C to 72 St, 81 St or 86 St are not listed as accessible. 59 St-Columbus Circle (A/B/C/D/1) is accessible but sits next to a no-viewing area
Stroller
Expect barricades and a thick crowd near the avenue; a carrier is easier
Restrooms
None we could confirm along this stretch; plan before you leave

An hour at the curb is a good result for a five-year-old
A Central Park path in spring, with Midtown behind the trees. Our own photo, April 2026.
After Columbus Circle the route turns east along Central Park South, with the park on one side and tall hotels on the other. Last year's viewing advice named it as a good spot. The practical point is the park behind you: it's the one place on the route where there's open space to step back into if the crowd gets to be too much, although the barricades may limit where you can cross.
Practical
Subway
N/Q/R/W to 57 St-7 Av (accessible station) or 59 St-Columbus Circle (accessible); 5 Av/59 St (N/R/W) is not accessible
The final stretch is down Sixth Avenue to 34th Street. Last year's list put the recommended viewing on Sixth between West 38th Street and Central Park South, with no public viewing between West 34th and 38th near the finish. The parade is nearest the end here, so it's still going when you arrive, which suits a family that doesn't want to be up before dawn.
NYC Tourism's article says enthusiastic spectators "get up at dawn to secure prime viewing spots". With small children I'd rather arrive later and watch from the back than lose a morning to a barricade. It's worth looking at the viewing rules once Macy's publishes them.
Practical
Subway
B/D/F/M to 47-50 Sts-Rockefeller Ctr (accessible station); 42 St-Bryant Pk is not listed as accessible
We found no list of official restrooms on the pages we could read, and the subway doesn't solve it. The one place I can point to with confidence is Bryant Park, which sits right on the route's Sixth Avenue side, between 40th and 42nd Streets. Reach it before the crowds do.
Midtown, Manhattan
Bryant Park restrooms and Winter Village
Two public restrooms, both staffed and cleaned throughout the day. One is on 42nd Street at the mid-block crossing behind the library, with touchless flushing, a changing table and, as the park puts it, classical music and fresh flowers. The other is on 40th Street near Le Carrousel, with an accessible restroom and changing table. The park's pages disagree on hours (one says 8am to 10pm daily for the 42nd Street restroom, another says 7am to midnight Thursday to Sunday in November), so don't rely on a late-night visit.
The Bank of America Winter Village opens October 28, 2026 and runs to February 28, 2027, daily including holidays. The rink is free to enter, with skate rental from $18.72 to $64.48 (administrative fees included), and children under 14 must have an adult with them. A rink open on Thanksgiving is a good plan B.
Practical
Subway
B/D/F/M to 42 St-Bryant Pk or 7 to 5 Av (not listed as accessible); the nearest accessible stations are Grand Central-42 St and Times Sq-42 St
Restrooms
42nd St (behind the library) and 40th St (near Le Carrousel), staffed, changing tables
Cost
Park free; skating admission free, rentals $18.72 to $64.48
The finish. The parade ends at Macy's Herald Square on West 34th Street. Last year's rules said there was no public viewing on West 34th Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues, and none on Sixth Avenue between 34th and 38th, so don't plan to stand at the finish. Streets from 33rd to 41st between Fifth and 10th Avenues were dispersal zones, which is New York for "you'll walk a long way around".

Balloon inflation near the American Museum of Natural History
Inside the Gilder Center at the American Museum of Natural History, the big white canyon of a building that opened in 2023. Our own photo, May 2024.
If you want to see the balloons without the Thursday crowd, the inflation takes place the afternoon before, outside the American Museum of Natural History. Last year it was Wednesday, November 26 from 1 to 6pm, with a free viewing line opening at noon and entry at West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue. NBC New York called it a family-friendly kickoff. The 2026 time and place were not announced when we checked on October 5, 2026; if it follows the pattern, it would be Wednesday, November 25.
The museum itself is closed on Thanksgiving Day, and open otherwise daily from 10am to 5:30pm.
Practical
Subway
B (weekdays only)/C to 81 St-Museum of Natural History (not listed as accessible); 1/2/3 to 72 St (accessible station)
Stroller
Strollers are welcome inside the museum, except in theaters
Restrooms

Some children are scared of marching bands, and some parents are scared of crowds. There's no shame in either. Four places that are open and quiet by comparison, none of them on the parade route.
Free, and the city says it runs every day of the week, year-round. Take it out and straight back for a view of the Statue of Liberty and the skyline without a ticket line. It's a good Thanksgiving afternoon for a family that needs to leave the house but doesn't want to stand near a barricade. The Thanksgiving timetable wasn't on the page we read, so check the schedule before you go.
Practical
Subway
1 to South Ferry (accessible station); R/W to Whitehall St is not accessible
The island says it's open daily and year-round. The Manhattan ferry from the Battery Maritime Building (10 South Street) is $5 for adults and free for children 12 and under, and runs every 30 minutes, with Sunday to Thursday service from 7am to 10pm. It's flat and mostly car-free, and I'd expect fewer people than in summer (that's a guess, not a count), which can be the whole point. Bring layers: the wind off the harbor doesn't care that it's Thanksgiving.

Subway

The day after Thanksgiving is when the farm's Christmas lights begin: Illuminate the Farm runs November 27, 2026 to January 7, 2027, and the farm's calendar says its details are "still under construction". Trees and wreaths are on sale from November 28 to December 23, and the Tree Lighting Ceremony is December 5. Check the page for prices. It's included here because the Friday after Thanksgiving is a much easier day to take children out than the Thursday.

Hearth & Harvest Festival at Historic Richmond Town
On Saturday, November 21, at 11am, Historic Richmond Town's Hearth & Harvest Festival has indigenous dance, storytelling and crafts. It's the weekend before Thanksgiving, for a family that wants the harvest part of Thanksgiving without the parade. The price wasn't announced when we checked.
Practical
Subway
Staten Island Ferry, then the S74 bus (the site says about 90 minutes from Midtown)
Before you build a plan B, check the doors. These say they're closed on Thanksgiving Day: the American Museum of Natural History, the Bronx Zoo (closed Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day, New Year's Day and Martin Luther King Jr. Day), the Intrepid Museum, and Brooklyn Botanic Garden (closed Thanksgiving in November). The ferries, Governors Island and Bryant Park's Winter Village are the open options above.
The weekend after is when the winter attractions start, with dates in our Christmas guide: the Train Show at the Botanical Garden from November 14, Lightscape from November 20, and the Bronx Zoo's winter lights from November 21.
Dress for sitting still outdoors. Standing in November isn't walking: layers, a hat, and something warm in a flask for the grown-ups.
Agree a meeting spot before you leave. If you lose a child in a Midtown crowd, the first stop is a police officer or a staff member, not a search.
Use the subway if you can. Officials encouraged spectators to take public transport last year, and the avenues around the route are closed to traffic. Elevators go out of service, so check the MTA's elevator status and don't count on one.
Ear protection is not silly. Marching bands and cheering at close range are loud, and younger children often prefer it muted.
Be ready to leave early. The parade runs to about noon, and nobody has ever regretted beating the dispersal crowd.
