Thanksgiving in NYC With Kids: What's Open, Packed and Free
Thanksgiving week in New York is five very different days. Here's what's open, what's packed and what's free on each of them in 2026, from the balloons on Wednesday to the light shows on Sunday.
Thanksgiving in NYC with kids centers on Thursday, November 26, 2026: the 100th Macy's parade, with schools closed that day and Friday. On Thanksgiving Day the big museums, the Bronx Zoo and Brooklyn Botanic Garden close, but the Staten Island Ferry, Wollman Rink and Bryant Park's Winter Village stay open. Friday brings the Nutcracker opening, Bronx Zoo Holiday Lights, Train Show evenings and free NYC Parks hikes.
Checked October 21, 2026. Every date, price and opening time below was read that day on the organizer's own page, or on our Almanac record of it where the organizer's site wouldn't load (we say so when that happened). Macy's hadn't published its 2026 parade-day details yet, and several places don't say on their websites whether they open on Thanksgiving itself, so where a page was silent we tell you that rather than guess.
Thanksgiving in NYC with kids is really five different days wearing the same sweater. The Wednesday is balloons and traffic. The Thursday is the parade, then a city that goes very quiet while everybody eats. Friday is the day the whole place switches to Christmas mode at once (the Nutcracker opens, the light shows run late, the farm in Queens plugs in its lights), and the weekend is that, but with more strollers. NYC public schools are closed on Thursday, November 26 and Friday, November 27, 2026, so New York children are out in force too.
The parade has its own guide, so this one covers everything around it, day by day: what's open, what's packed, what's free, and quieter plans for families who'd rather not stand behind a barricade at 7am.
Thanksgiving in NYC with kids: the 2026 week at a glance
Saturday, November 21: Hearth & Harvest Festival at Historic Richmond Town, Staten Island, 11am to 4pm.
Wednesday, November 25: the day before the parade. Macy's usually inflates the balloons that afternoon beside the American Museum of Natural History (2026 details not yet published). The Met is closed on Wednesdays.
Thursday, November 26: Thanksgiving Day and the 100th Macy's parade. Schools closed. The Natural History Museum, the Met, the Intrepid, the Bronx Zoo and Brooklyn Botanic Garden all say they're closed.
Friday, November 27: schools closed. The Met is open until 9pm, the Nutcracker opens at 8pm, NYBG's Train Show stays open to 8pm, the Bronx Zoo lights run, and NYC Parks lists free post-Thanksgiving hikes.
Saturday and Sunday, November 28 and 29: Train Show evenings, zoo lights, Lightscape, and a craft weekend at Wave Hill.
Wednesday: balloons and one museum that's open
Plenty of parents rate the day before as the best part, because the balloons are right there on the street and nobody has to get up at dawn. The catch: everyone visiting the city has heard about it too.

Balloon inflation near the American Museum of Natural History

In past years Macy's has inflated the giant balloons on the afternoon before the parade on the streets beside the American Museum of Natural History. Last year that was Wednesday, November 26, from 1 to 6pm, with free public viewing, a line that opened at noon and the entry at West 72nd Street and Columbus Avenue. For 2026, Macy's pages didn't show the inflation date or times when we checked, so treat Wednesday, November 25 as likely rather than promised.
Go early with small children. It's a slow walk past half-inflated characters lying face down under nets, which is either the funniest thing your child has ever seen or slightly unsettling.

The museum is open daily from 10am to 5:30pm and closed on Thanksgiving Day, so Wednesday and Friday are your windows. General admission for visitors from outside New York is $37 for adults and $22 for children 3 to 12; New York State residents pay what they wish, with suggested prices of $25 and $14, and children under 3 are free but still need a ticket.
The obvious Wednesday plan is dinosaurs in the morning, then balloons outside. Every other family has worked that out too, so book a timed ticket online.

Hearth & Harvest Festival at Historic Richmond Town
A few days before the big week, on Saturday, November 21, 2026, from 11am to 4pm, the historic village at 441 Clarke Avenue holds Indigenous dance, storytelling and crafts at the 3rd County Courthouse and the Native Encampment, hearth-cooking demonstrations using 18th and 19th century recipes in the old village kitchens, and vendors with handmade goods and Native American food.
Why go: it's the harvest side of Thanksgiving with no barricades, and a child who has watched someone cook over an open hearth will look at your oven with new respect. Tickets were listed as coming soon when we checked.
Practical
Subway
1 to South Ferry (accessible station) for the Staten Island Ferry, then a bus; check the site for directions
Fewer places than you'd think, and the list of closures is the useful bit, so here it is first. These say they're closed on Thanksgiving Day: the American Museum of Natural History, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Intrepid Museum, the Bronx Zoo and Brooklyn Botanic Garden. The Bronx Zoo's Holiday Lights skip the Thursday too. The Grand Central Holiday Fair is closed that day.
Getting around: last year the MTA ran the subway and buses on a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day, closed some station entrances along the parade route and skipped a couple of stations near it in the morning. The 2026 plan usually appears the week before. Expect Manhattan buses near the route to be rerouted until the parade's over.
Here's what is open, or says it's open every day.
Central Park, Manhattan
Wollman Rink, Central Park
Central Park in early April, the trees still bare and the towers showing through. Our own photo, April 2026.
Wollman's season runs from October 28, 2026 to March 16, 2027, and Thanksgiving Day is on its calendar as a Prime day, which means the top adult price of $40. Children 4 to 12 are $12 every day, 3 and under are free, and each child ticket includes one free non-skating chaperone aged 21 or over. Skate rental is $12. The rink's page lists no special holiday hours, so the normal Thursday hours of 10am to 9pm should apply.
An afternoon skate is a strong plan B for families who watched the parade on TV. The free chaperone ticket is the best deal in Midtown: one parent skates, the other holds the coats and gives notes.
Practical
Subway

Adults $16 to $40 by day; children 4 to 12 $12; 3 and under free; skates $12
The rink is open daily from 8am, until midnight from November 19 to January 3, and skating is free if you bring your own skates, although you still reserve a free ticket and wristband. Rentals cost $18.72 to $64.48 including fees. The holiday shops open 11am to 8pm on Thanksgiving Day. Children under 14 must be with an adult, and the rules ban spins, jumps and skating backwards, which will disappoint exactly one member of your family.
It's a couple of blocks off the parade's Sixth Avenue stretch, so it's a natural place to warm up once the floats have passed, and the park's staffed restrooms are right there.

The ferry is free, needs no ticket and runs 24 hours a day, every day, from Whitehall Terminal at 4 South Street to St. George on Staten Island. On weekends boats leave every 30 minutes; the holiday timetable is on the ferry's schedules page. Ride out, look at the Statue of Liberty from the right-hand side going out, and ride back.
On Thanksgiving afternoon, when half the city is asleep on a sofa, it's an easy outing. The ferry's site warns about scammers selling tickets; ignore them.

The Smithsonian's New York museum, in the old Alexander Hamilton U.S. Custom House at One Bowling Green, is always free with no tickets needed, and lists its hours as daily from 10am to 5pm, closed only on December 25. Inside there's the imagiNATIONS Activity Center for children.
Why go this week of all weeks: November is Native American Heritage Month, and a free, warm museum about the people who were here first tells a fuller Thanksgiving story than most of us got at school. The page doesn't mention Thanksgiving specifically, so check the calendar before relying on it that day.

A public garden on a hill above the Hudson at 4900 Independence Avenue, open Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 5:30pm. Adults are $10 and children 6 and up are $4, and admission is free all day on Thursdays. Whether it opens on Thanksgiving Day itself isn't on its pages, so call ahead. Our Almanac, from NYC Parks' listing, has a Family Art Project making tree-themed canvas bags on Saturday, November 28 and Sunday, November 29, from 10am to 1pm.
Why go: adults stare at the Palisades across the river while children roll down a lawn, and everyone's happy. It's about as far from the parade crowd as the city allows.

Thanksgiving Day opening, and the art project details
A Thanksgiving rule worth stealing: one big thing a day. The parade or the rink, the zoo or the Train Show. Everything after that is a walk, a snack or a nap, and nobody melts down in a crowd at 4pm.
Black Friday: the busiest day off of the year
Friday is when everything opens at once and the winter shows start their late nights. Have tickets in your pocket before you leave the hotel.
The Met is closed on Thanksgiving Day and also every Wednesday, which catches visitors out on the day before. On Friday it's open from 10am to 9pm. Children 12 and under are free, adults are $30, and New York State residents (plus students from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut) pay what they wish.
The late Friday opening is the trick. Go after 5pm, when the day crowd thins, and take the children to the arms and armor galleries (knights on horseback have never once failed to impress a seven-year-old).

Post-Thanksgiving Day hikes with the Urban Park Rangers
NYC Parks lists free ranger-led walks on Friday, November 27, 2026: a Post-Thanksgiving Day Hike from the Van Cortlandt Nature Center from 10am to noon, a two-hour Super Hike in Prospect Park from the Audubon Center at the Boathouse from noon to 2pm, and a Northern Manhattan Parks Super Hike from Inwood Hill Park from 1 to 2:30pm. These come from our Almanac, which read the Parks listings; the Parks site wouldn't load when we checked on October 21, so confirm times and meeting points before you set off.
Why go: it's free, and a ranger explaining what lives in the woods beats any parent saying fresh air is good for you. Past years' hikes were long, so this suits older children in proper shoes.

The sea lion pool at the Bronx Zoo. Our own photo, April 2026.
The zoo is closed on Thanksgiving Day, then the Holiday Lights run on Friday to Sunday, November 27 to 29 (they also open November 21 and 22, and continue on set dates to January 3). Holiday Lights tickets let you in from 1pm, the lights and lantern trails switch on at 4:30pm and final entry is 8pm. Tickets must be reserved in advance; the zoo's announcement didn't list prices. In the daytime, winter admission starts at $28.95 for adults and $20.95 for children 3 to 12.
The 1pm entry is the clever bit: animals in daylight, then lights at dusk, on one ticket. In theory nobody falls asleep in the stroller first. In theory.
Practical
Subway
2/5 to Pelham Pkwy (accessible station); check the zoo's directions for the nearest gate

Holiday Lights: advance tickets, prices on the zoo's site; daytime from $28.95 adults, $20.95 children

Holiday Train Show at the New York Botanical Garden
Model trains run through the garden's conservatory past landmark buildings made of plant parts, from November 14, 2026 to January 10, 2027. On November 27, 28 and 29 the conservatory stays open until 8pm, with last entry at 7pm. The page we read didn't list ticket prices or say whether the garden opens on Thanksgiving Day, so check the tickets page.
The Thanksgiving weekend evenings are the ones everyone books, so get in early or pick a weekday in mid November instead.

New York City Ballet's Nutcracker opens on Friday, November 27, 2026 at 8pm and runs to January 2, 2027 at the David H. Koch Theater. The ballet recommends it for ages 5 and up, it runs about two hours, and everyone needs a ticket, including children sitting on laps.
An 8pm curtain is late for a five-year-old, so for younger children look at the weekend matinees on the calendar. The page didn't show a starting price when we checked.
The farm at 73-50 Little Neck Parkway, on the far eastern edge of Queens, starts its holiday lights the day after Thanksgiving: Illuminate the Farm runs November 27, 2026 to January 7, 2027. The farm's calendar still said details were under construction when we checked, so hours and prices weren't out. On Saturday, November 28 there's also a Meet Our Animals session with the farm's Finewool sheep from 10 to 11am ($12) and a family gardening hour from 2 to 3pm ($5).
Why go: it's a working farm inside city limits, and about as far from Herald Square on Black Friday as you can get without leaving New York.
Practical
Subway
No subway nearby; check the farm's directions for bus options

Lights not announced; Meet Our Animals $12, gardening hour $5
Thanksgiving weekend: lights, zoos and somewhere to run
Prospect Heights, Brooklyn
Lightscape at Brooklyn Botanic Garden
The after-dark light trail runs from November 20, 2026 to January 3, 2027, with staggered entry. Prices include fees and depend on the night: adults $29 on Value Nights, $39 Off-Peak and $44 Peak; children 3 to 11 are $15, $22 or $28; babies 2 and under are free. The garden itself is closed on Thanksgiving Day, closes at 3:30pm through the run, and in November it's open Tuesday to Sunday by day, with children under 12 always free.
Popular dates sell out, and Thanksgiving weekend is about as popular as dates get, so book soon. Dress for standing still in the dark.

The island says it's open daily, year-round. The round-trip ferry from the Battery Maritime Building at 10 South Street costs $5 for adults, and it's free for children 12 and under, adults 65 and over and IDNYC holders. On Saturdays and Sundays every ride before 11am is free, though reservations are still recommended. The Brooklyn ferries stop after November 1, so it's Manhattan only by then.

The ferry schedule, especially on Thanksgiving Day
A lot of New York restaurants take Thanksgiving reservations, often for a fixed holiday menu, and the family-friendly time slots (anything before 6pm) go first. Book as soon as you've settled your plans, ask whether there's a children's price or a kids' menu, and check whether the restaurant is near the parade route, because getting a taxi across Midtown before noon is a lost cause.
Most big stores, Macy's included, usually close on the day, so shop on Wednesday if you have a kitchen. The relaxed option is a big lunch out on Friday and leftovers in the park on Thursday. Pie in a park in November is a New York tradition now. I've just decided.
How to do Thanksgiving week without meltdowns
Book the timed things first: the Natural History Museum, the Train Show, Lightscape, the zoo lights and the Nutcracker all use timed or reserved tickets, and Friday to Sunday evenings go fastest.
Use Wednesday and Friday for museums. Thursday is when most of them close.
Keep one plan that needs no ticket: the Staten Island Ferry, Governors Island or a long walk in Prospect Park.
Dress for standing still. Late November means hats and gloves by the afternoon, and light shows mean an hour outside after dark.
Check the MTA before every trip. Holiday schedules, parade-route station closures and elevators that go out of service all happen this week, so check the elevator status page if you're traveling with a stroller.
One honest last word. If the forecast is grim on Thanksgiving Day, watch the parade on TV, eat too much, and save your energy for Friday, when the city has more open and more to see. Nobody has ever regretted skipping a cold sidewalk with a tired three-year-old.
